Meet Heidi

Every person’s story deserves to be heard. At Blue Current Psychiatry, healing begins with listening.

Heidi A. Cook, MA, MSN, PMHNP-BC is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who believes healing begins with feeling heard. She understands that reaching out for help can feel overwhelming, and she is committed to creating a space where every patient feels respected, understood, and supported.

For more than 25 years, Heidi has dedicated her career to caring for people during some of life’s most vulnerable moments. Her professional journey has always centered on guiding others with compassion, steadiness, and clinical excellence.

She began her nursing career in 2000 and spent nearly 14 years working in intensive care, caring for critically ill patients while supporting families through life’s greatest challenges. Those experiences revealed how deeply emotional well-being and physical health are connected and inspired her to earn a Master of Arts in Counseling from Liberty University.

While completing counseling practicum and internship experiences on an inpatient psychiatric unit, Heidi discovered a passion for psychiatric care. She later spent more than seven years as a transplant coordinator with LifeNet Health, where she was privileged to help honor the lives and final wishes of organ and tissue donors while supporting their families with dignity, compassion, and respect. The role demanded both technical expertise and a calm, reassuring presence during profoundly difficult moments—qualities that continue to shape her approach as a psychiatric provider.

Heidi went on to earn her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Virginia and became a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Today, she provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and supportive therapy for adults ages 18 to 64 experiencing ADHD, anxiety and panic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders. She also serves individuals with co-occurring substance use concerns. While she does not provide medication-assisted treatment such as Suboxone® or methadone, she welcomes patients seeking comprehensive psychiatric care while navigating recovery.

Heidi believes medication is only one part of healing. By combining evidence-based treatment with supportive therapy, patient education, and collaborative care, she helps individuals better understand themselves, strengthen healthy coping skills, and move toward lasting emotional wellness.

Patients often describe Heidi as calm, approachable, and easy to talk with. She values collaboration and believes the best treatment plans are created together, combining clinical expertise with each person’s unique experiences, strengths, and goals.

Outside of work, Heidi enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and spoiling her dog, Nacho. She especially loves spending time at the beach, where the water has long been a place of peace, reflection, and healing in her own life. That personal connection inspired the name Blue Current Psychiatry and reflects the calm, steady partnership she hopes every patient experiences as they navigate their own path toward healing.

Philosophy of Practice

My practice is grounded in two core values: caring and competence. I believe meaningful psychiatric care begins with taking the time to truly listen, understand the whole person, and work collaboratively toward solutions that feel both clinically appropriate and personally sustainable.

I take a holistic and integrative approach, considering the biological, psychological, behavioral, relational, lifestyle, and spiritual dimensions of health. Medication can be an important tool, but it is only one part of care. When medication is appropriate, I believe in thoughtful and judicious prescribing—using the lowest effective dose for the time it is needed, while regularly reassessing whether medications can be simplified, reduced, or discontinued when appropriate.

I also believe in the value of counseling, supportive therapy, healthy habits, and meaningful connection alongside medication management. My goal is to create a space where people feel heard, respected, and free to be where they are while also having the support to grow toward where they want to be.

Ultimately, I hope to help each person find greater understanding, balance, and peace while navigating the currents of life.
